The Discipline of Doing Nothing

Martha is always busy, going, doing, and serving.

Mary is just sitting - listening.

Martha is about scurrying, hurrying, worrying if everything she has started doing is going to get done on time.

Mary is still sitting - hearing.

Martha is getting somewhat disturbed at Mary’s ability to remain motionless for so long, when it seems that there is so much to be done in so little time.

Martha begins complaining to Me, when all the while, it is I who have been trying to get her attention. Now that her face is finally directed upward toward Mine, I hope she will remain motionless long enough to hear My reply.

“My child, you are always so busy doing for Me, sometimes I need you to just be for Me.”

Be still and know that I am God. - Psalm 46:10
