The Spirit of Adultery
You adulterers and adulteresses, don’t you know that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore shall be a friend of the world is the enemy of God –
James 4:7-10.
James doesn’t mince his words. Unlike many of today’s pastors who work overtime trying not to offend anyone with the Truth, James boldly proclaims the word of God to us whether we like it or not. If we are wise, we will listen.
We earn the titles of adulterers and adulteresses when we prefer the things of men above the things of God and it’s easy to do in this day and age of fleshly allurements. We are constantly bombarded with pleasurable images and the enticements that prosperity can bring. It takes a great deal of discipline to turn our eyes away from these distractions and focus our attention on God alone. But this is exactly what God is calling His people to in this last hour. The nations of the world and particularly the United States are currently on a conveyor belt to the prophesied last days of final judgment on this planet. The Book of Revelation outlines some of the horrors that are upon us and will continue to intensify until the Lord returns.
We desperately need to seek Him in these times and those who can hear Him will report what He has whispered in their ears and written in His word. When the judgment was about to fall on ancient Israel because of her adultery, God sent His prophets as a last resort to turn her away from sudden destruction. Our merciful God is never willing to afflict, and He will avert our punishment if we can manage to heed His voice and turn away from our destructive behaviors before it is too late. We can change the future with heartfelt repentance and a willingness to let Him change us into the people He wants us to be.
Unfortunately as the prophecy foretells, the people will be unwilling to repent as a whole, but there are those diamonds among the rust that truly belong to the Lord and will hear His voice and respond. He is calling us to throw off the spirit of adultery that is carrying the nations and His remnant will respond.
The book of Revelation portrays the apostate church as a whore being carried by a scarlet beast, (The world) in these last hours. God is calling us to make a choice, we can take her seat and choose to be carried by the world or led by the Spirit of Christ. His sheep will hear his voice and choose to follow. Will you be one of them?
