Miracle at the Mall
But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ. –
Philippians 4:19
Years ago my husband and I made a meager living doing art shows in the malls in California. We used my husband’s Christian art as ministry tools for evangelism. Money was always tight, and when we arrived at one particular event, I did not have the money for the fee. I gave a bad check to the promoter of the show and told him to please not cash it until the end of the art show. We had worked with him many times before, and because we were regulars at his events, I knew he would trust us, and I was also sure that after four days in a mall we would make enough to cover the sixty dollar fee.
After four days and many anxious hours waiting and praying at our display for a sale, we were fearing that we would not be able to cover the check for our fee. This was the first time this had ever happened. God had always provided for us and we didn’t understand.
It was just an hour before the art show was over, and the mall was going to close, when a man walked up to our display. He was a Christian and he really liked one of the prints my husband had done of Jesus smiling. We were selling them for fourteen dollars and ninety-five cents. The man told us that he wanted to purchase the print, but he needed to go back to his car and get his checkbook. He left, and we thought that if he did come back, at least we’d have enough money to buy a few groceries, but the fee was not going to happen.
I was anxiously rehearsing in my mind how I was going to try and negotiate with the promoter, when the man returned. He had a strange look on his face. Then he said, “The Lord told me to give you one hundred dollars.”
I replied ecstatically, “Yes, He did!”
Then I explained our situation. I watched as tears welled up in his eyes. He was so moved that the Lord had used him to help us. And we were rejoicing that once again God had miraculously provided for us in our ministry. It also gave us a wonderful opportunity to share this testimony with some of the other artists at the show who were nonbelievers. To them, having a stranger come up and give you money like that was a miracle on the scale of God parting the Red Sea for Moses. They were astounded.
We are very grateful for the people we have met over the years that could hear God’s Still Small Voice and responded to become instruments of His generosity and compassion.
