And the angel said to them, “Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” – Luke 2:10,11
Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’ coming to save us from our sins. This has to be the focus, otherwise we will get disappointed if the packages we ordered don’t arrive on time, or our holiday plans are thwarted. He is the gift, He is the love we celebrate.
The love He brings through the knowledge that we are saved by His sacrifice is what enables us to celebrate no matter what our physical circumstances may bring. We can’t separate Christmas from John 3:16. Christmas is all about the cross. He was born to die for humanity and His example of selfless giving is what our gift exchanging is all about.
The Christmas tree represents the tree upon which our Lord was crucified. The ornaments hanging upon its branches are representatives of the shimmering sacrificial love that was also hung upon a tree for us. Christmas should be a joyful celebration of our salvation which is made possible by the Baby, the gift that was born beneath the shadow of that tree.
