"You Can't Prove Christianity!" "You can't prove Christianity!" was the first line of an email I received from someone who was intent on trying to discredit my faith. How would I answer him? What could I say to him that would "prove" my Christian faith is real?
First of all, I would say that Christianity doesn’t need to be proved. Jesus said no one could come to Him unless they were drawn by the Father. Those who are called by the Father accept the Truth by faith. Then these believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit who “Manifests” Himself to them. A believer can experience the Presence of God as a tangible reality. He sees his prayers answered. Personally I have learned to live on miracles. When I was in dire need of funds, on at least two different occasions, total strangers came up to me and said, “The Lord told me to give you some money.”
The believer can hear the Still Small Voice of God.
I suppose you could argue semantics. You could recount how Jesus fulfilled over three hundred Old Testament Prophecies concerning the Messiah, and the fact that the mathematical odds of Him fulfilling just eight of them are one in a quadrillion. You could relate how there is more documentation closer to the original sources than any other ancient writings including Shakespeare. You could relate the endless testimonies of miracles. I personally know a woman whose firstborn daughter was born without eyes. She was convinced that Jesus would put eyes in her baby. And one day, supernaturally, miraculously– He did.
I suppose we could say all that, but it isn’t necessary, because the Bible makes a distinction between the wicked and the just. While all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God, the Word of God defines the wicked as those who will not come to God. To those wicked ones no amount of arguing the Christian position is going to move them. God knows the hearts and He knows who are His.
Like the angry mob at the foot of Jesus’ Cross who demanded that He come down and prove to them that He was the Messiah, He chose instead to reveal His resurrected Glory to a handful of the called – as He continues to do to this day. Copyright 2002 by H.D. ShivelyApologetics | Return to Homepage |
